Self Guided Walking Holidays in England

Discover England's charming countryside on a self guided walking tour

We design self-guided walking holidays that enable visitors to sample the countryside and the history of Britain. Our routes bring alive the descriptions of writers like William Wordsworth, Thomas Hardy, Boswell and Johnson. Visit places where Roman legions marched and fierce battles were fought. On every tour there is great historical interest as well as natural beauty. Most of the walks follow, at least in part, sections of the reasonably well maintained long distance paths or National Trails whose concept and history has origins in the Great Trespass Movement of the 1930’s. Dramatic scenery, castles, historic churches nestled among wild flowers, sleepy villages, sunshine and rain: these are all integral parts of walking in Britain.

Our self-guided walking holidays are fully flexible which means you can normally start your walk on any day during the season and customise by adding extra days for resting or sightseeing. As you're walking independently, you're free to follow the trail at your own pace. You set your pace as you are not limited by the constraints of group travel.

You are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so. As long as you are reasonably active you will be able to find a suitable tour and all of our tours are graded to help you choose the right walk for you.

Hotels

Often family run, these charming hotels range from 2 to 4 stars and provide access to local living thanks to your hosts. The hospitality is generous and their local knowledge is invaluable. Where possible, we choose locations that add to your experience.

Bed & breakfasts (B&Bs)

Simple yet rich in local character, the B&Bs chosen are clean, comfortable and run by hosts that help add to your experience.

Guesthouses

Similar to bed & breakfasts, these family-owned accommodations are clean and comfortable. Rooms with en suites generally have a shower but no bath due to space. There may be a separate room with a bath tub.

Country Inns

Enjoy the cosy country setting and convenience of staying in a comfortable place that is attached to a restaurant or pub, usually on the ground floor with the rooms above.

No self guided walking holiday in England would be complete without eating and drinking in one of its many quaintly decorated pubs for a hearty meal and to sample some local stout. There are tea rooms to enjoy a traditional English high tea of cream and scones to refuel during your journey. Be sure to visit one of the farmer’s markets selling the region’s cheeses, meats, honey and beer, and there are even Michelin star restaurants for serious foodies.
