Self Guided Walking Holidays in Spain

Discover the many delights of Spain on an amazing self guided walking tour

Traditions of a bygone era are still alive and well in the rustic villages found throughout Spain. Many of the authentic travel experiences are found well away from the major cities and tourist centres. The best way to discover the true essence of these quintessential Spanish experiences is on a self guided walking holiday. The architectural heritage of many centuries of Moorish (Moroccan) rule is still strong in Andalucia, notably at the Alhambra of Granada and among the flat-roofed white-washed villages and ancient irrigation channels of the Alpujarras.

The Spanish mainland is blessed with many dramatic walking areas including that of Aragon with its high (Alto) canyon lands and forests, rugged and still remote, Catalonia, with its lively cosmopolitan capital Barcelona and the nearby dramatic rock pinnacles of Monserrat. In Catalonia we offer an interesting cycling tour through the ancient volcanic ridges of Garrotxa, and onward to the lively historical city of Girona. This forms the southern flank of the Pyrenees, which at its eastern end terminates abruptly at the Vermillion Coast on the border with France.

In the far south of Spain, on the flanks of the Sierra Nevada is our tour in the Alpujarras, an area of undulating walks that has not quite shaken off its Moorish influence after 700 years. An easier tour explores the delights of the little visited Sierra de Aracena in the far south-west.

Part of Spain are the Mediterranean Balearic islands, where there is fine walking in the Sierra Tramontana of Majorca. Enjoy fantastic mountain and coastal paths, sometimes high above the sea. You will be able to visit Soller, Deia and Valldemosa, full of their own historic and literary associations.

In the Atlantic Ocean are Spanish sub-tropical Canary Islands including La Palma and the beautiful volcanic island of La Gomera, which has inspired several of our walkers to revisit its dramatic hillsides.

Our self-guided walking holidays are fully flexible which means you can normally start your walk on any day during the season and customise by adding extra days for resting or sightseeing. As you're walking independently, you're free to follow the trail at your own pace. You set your own pace as you are not limited by the constraints of group travel.

You are free to shorten or lengthen your walk as the terrain permits and can even take a day off, although you may need to travel onto your next accommodation by taxi or public transport in order to do so. As long as you are reasonably active you will be able to find a suitable tour and all of our tours are graded to help you choose the right walk for you.

Hotels

Often family run, these charming hotels range from 2 to 4 stars and provide access to local living thanks to your hosts. The hospitality is generous and their local knowledge is invaluable. Where possible, we choose locations that add to your experience.

Farmhouse bed & breakfasts (B&Bs)

Live like a local on a farm, or purpose-built farm. Rooms are clean, comfortable, usually have a pleasant outlook and rooms vary as to whether they include an en suite bathroom or shared facilities.

Guesthouses

Similar to bed & breakfasts, these family-owned accommodations are clean and comfortable. Rooms with en suites generally have a shower but no bath due to space. There may be a separate room with a bath tub.

Agriturismi

These 'farm stay' style accommodations are found on independently owned working farms. You can expect fantastic local flavours at meal time from your hosts.

Breakfasts are included on all our trips and usually consist of breads, meats, cheese, fruit, tea, coffee & juice. Evening meals that may be included will normally be a set 3 course menu with a choice of 2 to 4 menu items. In some locations you may have the option to upgrade to a la carte. Spain is a food lovers paradise wtih well known regional dishes such as paella, gazpacho and tortilla espanola.  An evening can easily be spent sipping wine and eating tapas at a local bar or restaurant.

Please ensure your passport is stamped on arrival in the Schengen area. For all other nationalities and for longer stays in countries covered by the Schengen Agreement (Australian New Zealand, Canadian and US passport holders), please contact the relevant embassy. Stays of longer than 90 days in the Schengen area require a long stay visa for the country you are spending most time in. However long stay visas are unlikely to be issued unless there is a valid reason (eg. studying in country). Unfortunately we cannot assist in obtaining visas for long stays due to individual country visa requirements.
