Walking & Cycling Holidays in Austria
Like most European countries, Austria looks back on a very eventful history. Yet there are some elements of the Austrian character that haven’t changed much over the centuries: the partiality for indulgence, beauty, and cultivation has always been a driving force in the country’s past and present.
Austria has many great attractions, including the legacy of the Hapsburg Empire in Vienna, the life and music of Mozart in Salzburg and the magnificent scenery of its alpine hinterland. Austria's diversity shines not only through its landscape but through its population. Due to its central location in the heart of Europe and its vibrant history, on your hiking holidays in Austria you will see a cross-section of cultures that flow together and are combined throughout the country.
WHEN TO WALK and Cycle IN AUSTRIA
While urban centres in the country serve as year-round holiday destinations, it is the summer (between April and October) that presents the best time of year for walking holidays in Austria. Over this time the weather is at its best: you can make the most of the extended daylight hours (light until around 21:00) and you have less chance of running into snow in the hills. The shoulder seasons (late April-June and Sept-early October) are especially good for hiking holidays in Austria as the crowds tend to be less and in the autumn you will find a number of festivals celebrating the harvest in the villages. It is important to note that in alpine regions the weather can change severely and without warning, so it is always good to be prepared.
POPULAR WALKING ROUTES IN AUSTRIA
One of our best hiking holidays in Austria is focused around the Dachstein and Gosaukamm Mountains where you will find some of the most dramatic of Austrian alpine scenery. The lower slopes of alpine pasture are dotted with picturesque lakes and villages including gorgeous Halstatt, whilst the high triangular mountaintops are smothered with glacial ice.
